Laser Land Leveling

A well leveled land has been a very important perquisite in agriculture particularly in rice farming. It offers significant amount of benefit not just in terms of yield but also in environmental sustainability (e.g., savings in water and efficient use of fuel, fertilizer). Farmers have been putting significant amount of resources in this activity especially in small farm areas where wet leveling with 2 wheeled-tractors is commonly employed. While some farmers would opt to dry level their fields and check level by ponding water. Studies have indicated that unevenness in the field can waste irrigation water by as much as 20-25% which translates to 20% fuel cost for pumping water. Fields that are properly leveled have higher agronomic efficiency in terms of nitrogen uptake (increased to about 10-13%) and uniformity in heading resulting to yield increase of 5-15% and increase in head rice recovery of 2%. Many other benefits are derived in a well-level field in soil and crop management.

intro pics laser leveling

The introduction of laser guided leveling by Spectra and the development of a drag bucket by IRRI in 1996 provided the impetus of an efficient leveling technology that aided consolidation of farmers’ fields in many countries in Asia. Up until now, the technology on laser leveling is getting much appreciation with the great benefits it contributed to farm mechanization and in environmental sustainability.

This four-day course is intended to cater to the demands of NARES partners to institutionalize training for better adoption and dissemination of the technology.

  • At the end of the course the participants are expected to
  • Fully appreciate and understand the systems used and benefits of a well-leveled field thru laser leveling
  • Identify and understand the components and operation of a laser controlled leveling system
  • Undertake a topographic field survey using the laser leveling system
  • Calculate the expected cut/fill, time, and cost of land leveling
  • Experience the setting-up, operation, and troubleshooting a laser controlled leveling system
  • Check the accuracy of the laser transmitter
  • Measure distance using calibrated step
  • Calculate the economics of a laser leveling system
  • Undertake a Certification exam for skills in laser leveling (Pilot)
