The training of the next generation of agricultural heroes is important for every nation’s food security. To be able to do this, it is important to first expose the young minds and hope that this will encourage youth participation and engagement in agriculture.
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Rice Planting Experience provides participants an overview and experience on growing one of the world’s most important crops, the rice plant. Participants will be engaged in mini-lectures and hands-on rice field activities. They will experience the fun and thrills of getting their “feet wet” when preparing the land and planting the rice plant using traditional and modern technologies. This gives the participants the knowledge and experience of what farmers do to ensure that we have rice at our meal tables.
Three types of program packages are being offered by IRRI Education. Apprentice Journey 1 is intended for preschoolers to Grade 6 students. Apprentice Journey 2 is for Grades 7-12, undergraduate students and young adults, and Master Journey is for young professionals.
Training duration varies from 3 to 6 hours, which includes introduction to the rice plant, overview of rice production, hands-on field experience, and laboratory and field visits.
