Quality Seed Production Training Course (Africa)

Course Description

Quality seeds are the foundation of successful rice farming. In this course, the participants will discover the characteristics of quality seeds and why using quality seeds is the secret to improving rice harvests. This intensive 1-week training is designed to provide participants with the essential knowledge and skills on seed systems. Participants will examine the science, management, and production of quality rice seeds, seed certification, seed control, seed health, and relevant laws. They will be engaged in demonstrations, hands-on activities, site visits, and classroom and in-field discussions with IRRI’s rice seed experts, as well as another sector expert. 

Course Objectives

By the end of the training course, participants should be able to: 

  • Understand the importance of seed systems and quality seed production; 
  • Exposed and refreshed on seed certification, seed control, seed health and seed production technologies; 
  • Examine the processes in producing quality seed and acquire techniques, methodologies, and standards in quality seed production; and 
  • Demonstrate the applications of quality seed. 
  • Be able to plan seed production based on demand forecasting for the different seed classes (basic, certified, etc.). 
  • Know the different requirement for seed production between hybrid rice seeds and inbreds

Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Explain the principles of quality rice seed systems and production.  
  • Apply best practices for quality seed production and management.  
  • Plan seed production based on demand forecasting and seed classes.  
  • Differentiate hybrid and inbred rice seed production requirements.  
  • Implement seed quality assurance, testing, certification, and seed health standards.  
  • Apply practical skills in seed production, processing, and storage through hands-on learning. 

Learning Modality

The course will be delivered face-to-face through activities involving lectures, hands-on training, and field visits.

Target Audience

The course is intended for professionals and individuals involved in the agricultural industry, specifically those working in seed production, seed distribution, and seed entrepreneurship.

Pre-Training Activity: 04 August 2026 | 2:00-4:00 PM IST via Microsoft Teams

Training Duration: 10-14 August 2026 | Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Morogoro, Tanzania

Course Fee

External participants (with food allowance & accommodation) - USD 1,086

The course fee applies to external and non-IRRI participants and includes the training kit, welcome and closing dinners, and daily snacks and lunch for the duration of the training.

In addition, participants are responsible for covering their transportation expenses (including airfare and airport transfers) to and from ISARC, as well as their own accommodation, medical insurance, and allowance.

External participants (without food allowance & accommodation) - USD 699

The course fee applies to external and non-IRRI participants and includes the training kit, welcome and closing dinners, and daily snacks and lunch for the duration of the training.

In addition, participants are responsible for covering their transportation expenses (including airfare and airport transfers) to and from ISARC, as well as their own accommodation, medical insurance, and allowance.

IRRI Staff - USD 612

The course fee applies to IRRI Staff from both Headquarters and Country Offices and covers the training kit, welcome and closing dinners, and daily snacks and lunch for the duration of the training.

In addition, participants are responsible for covering their transportation expenses (including airfare and airport transfers) to and from ISARC, as well as their accommodation and allowance, which should be charged to their respective bus codes.

Featured Resource Persons

Ajay Panchbhai (ESA Regional Lead – Breeding, Seed Systems and Product Management, IRRI) 

Ajay Panchbhai is a seed systems and agricultural innovation specialist with more than 25 years of experience in rice research, varietal deployment, technology transfer, regulatory affairs, and public-private partnerships. He currently serves as IRRI’s Regional Lead for East and Southern Africa (ESA), where he supports the development and scaling of climate-smart rice varieties and sustainable seed systems across multiple countries. His work has contributed to strengthening seed value chains, accelerating variety adoption, fostering regional seed policy harmonization, and building partnerships with governments, research institutions, seed companies, and farmer organizations. Dr. Panchbhai has extensive experience in capacity development and is actively engaged in advancing resilient and market-oriented rice seed systems across Africa. He also spearheaded global partnerships for CGIAR Seed Equal (now Inclusive Delivery).

Martin Ernest Ndomondo (Senior Seed Systems Specialist, IRRI-Tanzania)

Martin Ernest Ndomondo is a Senior Seed Systems Specialist with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Tanzania. He works to strengthen the national rice seed system through capacity development, variety replacement, and digital innovation. He has trained farmers in quality seed production, supported the launch of SeedCast-Tanzania, and collaborates with TARI on varietal trials to promote improved rice varieties across major rice-growing regions. 

Fabiola Peter Langa (Agricultural Research Officer/Centre coordinator for Technology Transfer and Partnership, TARI, Morogoro, Tanzania) 

Fabiola Peter Langa is a Seed specialist with more than 10 years’ experience in the agricultural industry. Currently she is working as a Researcher and Coordinator for Technology Transfer and Partnership at TARI-Dakawa. Ms. Langa deals with coordination of labor force and bringing about technology dissemination activities in accordance. Work closely with other Agricultural stakeholders and farmers, especially in rice crops. Furthermore, she has been the focal person at TARI Dakawa on the IRRI projects including the current research project on Developing High-Impact Rice Hybrid for Sub-Saharan Africa. Ms. Langa is hardworking, innovative, with good communication skills; team and result-oriented gear.

Atugonza Bilaro (Principal Research Scientist, TARI)  

Atugonza Bilaro is a rice breeder with over 17 years of experience in Tanzania’s rice sector, specializing in rice breeding, seed systems, and varietal development. He has led seed production planning, delivered training programs for researchers, extension officers, seed producers, and farmers, and contributed to the development and release of several rice varieties. He currently serves on the Seed Bridge Task Force, collaborating with IRRI, TOSCI, and other stakeholders to strengthen seed deployment strategies for improved rice varieties in Tanzania.
