To support the modernization of agricultural systems and strengthen national capacity in rice production, researchers are invited to participate in a specialized 3.5-month on-the-job training program hosted by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines.
Program Overview
This intensive, hands-on training focuses on three core areas: hybrid rice breeding, seed production, and cultivation. Participants are introduced to hybrid rice technology, including floral biology, parent line selection, and breeding techniques such as genomic selection and combining ability analysis. Training also covers seed production practices, including field preparation, synchronization of parental lines, GA₃ application, roguing, pollination techniques, and post-harvest handling. The final phase of the program explores hybrid rice cultivation under various conditions, implementation of field trials, and assessment of the socio-economic impact of hybrid rice technologies. Practical sessions, field visits, and close engagement with IRRI scientists equip participants with the technical knowledge and skills to support the adoption and scaling of hybrid rice technologies in their respective countries.
Strategic Global Opportunity
This program is designed to build a pool of trained researchers and educators, promote sustainable and climate-resilient rice technologies, and facilitate knowledge exchange across national and regional systems. It supports broader efforts to improve rice productivity, food security, and the resilience of agricultural systems in the face of climate change.
Target Audience
