LOS BAÑOS, Philippines—How can agricultural research move beyond experiments, reports, and technical publications to reach the people who need it most?
This question took center stage during the recently concluded Training Course on Communicating Science and Research Results, held on 11–13 August 2026 at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna.
Implemented under the Project UPSKILL, the training course brought together 26 agricultural communicators from the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Offices and attached agencies for three days of hands-on learning in strategic messaging, storytelling, digital content production, and communication planning.
During the opening program, Dr. Anilyn Maningas, Head of IRRI Education; Dr. Madonna Casimero, Senior Scientist in Agronomy and Lead of Project UPSKILL; and Dr. Cecilia N. Gascon, Director of the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research, underscored a critical reality that set the tone for the entire training course: agricultural research can only create meaningful impact when its findings are understood by its intended audience and acted upon.
Strengthening agricultural innovation goes beyond investing in research and technologies. It also means investing in the people who help move knowledge from research institutions to the communities, farmers, policymakers, and decision-makers who can use it.
IRRI’s Communication and Engagements Department led the training, with Ms. Kristina Cassandra Santos, Head of Communication and Engagements, together with Ms. Xenina Ibabao, Senior Manager for Strategic and Science Communication; Ms. Danica Louise Sembrano, Specialist in Science Communication; Ms. Ruby Shaira Panela, Senior Specialist in Media, Campaigns and Branding; and Mr. David Bryce Saguin, Officer in Digital Video Production guiding the participants through the sessions.
Participants learned to move beyond technical jargon, understand diverse audiences, build strategic messages, humanize scientific evidence, and use storytelling and digital platforms to make research more accessible.
They also put these skills into practice. Rather than relying solely on lectures, the course immersed the participants in the role of practitioners for specific sectors. After each session, they were challenged to apply what they had learned—mapping audiences, constructing message houses, writing web and blog articles, developing platform-specific social media content, creating short-form video scripts, and designing communication plans for actual agricultural research and innovations.
















Participants also took part in practical “bus stop” exercises—interactive stations featuring real pest specimens, disease symptoms, and weed samples—which tested and strengthened their diagnostic and identification skills.
By the end of the training, participants developed context-specific Learning Action Plan including the different tools discussed in the course; 
Throughout the workshop, participants explored the concepts of agrifood systems transformation, self-sufficiency, food security, agricultural policy, and international food trade through expert-led lectures and interactive discussions.

The workshop concluded with participant group presentations, reflections, testimonials, and the awarding of certificates, highlighting four days of intensive learning and international collaboration.


Through the Training Course on Rice Root Phenotyping, IRRI continues to strengthen global research capacity by equipping scientists and researchers with practical skills and advanced knowledge in rice root science.

Far from being purely theoretical, the training emphasized

Women represent about 50% of the labor force (World Bank, 2024) in rice farming, particularly in planting, weeding, harvesting, and processing, yet face time, information, and input constraints that shape farmers’ technology adoption outcomes. Recent national statistics and briefs emphasize the need for sex-disaggregated monitoring to guide equitable delivery (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS] & Office of the Chief Government Statistician [OCGS], 2024; Evans School Policy Analysis and Research [EPAR], 2020). Within CERA, I will advocate for women’s active participation in research dissemination and ensure that improved rice varieties reach them equitably. Empowering women with climate-resilient technologies can significantly uplift households and strengthen community resilience.
I grew up in a small district called Maswa, situated in the northern part of Tanzania, south-east of Lake Victoria. I was raised by my mother. She was a nurse but also a smallholder farmer. She cultivated rice and maize at our farm located around our home. Just like other smallholder farmers, my mother faced many challenges, such as unpredictable weather patterns, use of old, traditional varieties, limited access to inputs, and poor local soil knowledge. Growing up with my mother exposed me to the most traditional ways of cultivating rice and the challenges they faced. The whole experience basically drove my desire to one day become an agricultural researcher; hence, I chose to pursue a BSc in Agronomy.
I expect to enhance my knowledge and skills in climate-smart and eco-friendly rice production, particularly in developing practical solutions for drought-prone areas. I look forward to contributing to scientific innovation through agronomic research and sharing findings that address yield gaps and strengthen resilience in rice systems. I also expect to promote gender equity by ensuring women farmers actively engage in training and decision-making, thereby supporting inclusive development.



The agriculture sector in Tanzania employs about 65% of the population, with rice also identified as a strategic crop for national and regional food security (Basungu, 2023). Yet gender groups like women farmers face systemic barriers: less than 20% of women own land, and fewer than 15% have access to formal credit (Awoke et al., 2025). At the same time, rice yields average just 2.2 tons per hectare, far below the potential of 6–7 tons under improved management (Kwesiga et al., 2020; Mboyerwa et al., 2022). Bridging these gaps requires not only technical innovations but also institutional reforms that ensure these gender groups, like women and youth, can actively participate and benefit in the face of climate-related risks.
